1B basketball season began around Whitman County last weekend with boys and girls teams in action.
The Colton girls welcomed Tenison Woods Academy from Australia Friday, Dec. 1, for their opener at home while, across the county in Garfield, freshman guard Austin Jones led the Garfield/Palouse boys in a non-league loss to Lakeside.
Colton got a narrow girls’ win over the Australians before blowing out Genesee Saturday. League foes Garfield/ Palouse opened the senior season of Katie Arrasmith and Payson Griner with wins over Lakeside and Tekoa/Rosalia.

Oakesdale girls
Oakesdale has begun the year at 3-0 with a 56-19 win over Liberty Christian; 51-13 over Troy, Idaho, and 44-37 over Valley Christian.
The Nighthawks lost just two starters from last year, from a team which finished fourth in state.
With Jacey Johnson and Lindsey Lindgren graduated, seniors Madison Shrope and Emma Perry lead the 2017-18 team along with returners Logan Reed, a junior forward, and Lizzie Perry, a sophomore guard. Also starting is freshman LouEllen Reed, making for an Oakesdale starting five of two sets of sisters.
Leading scorers for the Nighthawks’ first week were Logan Reed with 15 against Valley Christian, Lizzie Perry with 20 against Liberty Christian and Logan Reed/Emma Perry both with 13 against Troy.
The team is coached by Dan Brown, who previously led the Tekoa/Oakesdale girls from 2008-13. He succeeds Ken Lindgen.
Oakesdale will play next at Palouse Friday.

Garfield/Palouse 57, Tekoa/Rosalia 38
The Vikings went to 2-0 on the season in a non-league win at Tekoa. Arrasmith led Gar/Pal with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Griner delivered 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jeadan Askins added 12 points and Paige Collier scored 10.
The Vikings bolted to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter to take control of the game.
Colton 86,
Genesee 25
The Wildcats went to Genesee Saturday, Dec. 2, and ran away with a non-league win, lead by five players scoring in double figures. Emily Schultheis had 17 points while Dakota Patchen scored 15, Georgia Meyer 13, Jordyn Moerhle 12 and Josie Schultheis 10. Freshman guard Rylee Vining added nine points and seven assists.
Colton 58, Tenison Woods Academy 54
Playing an Australian team touring the U.S., Colton won their season opener as Patchen scored 26 points and Emily Schultheis had 12. Vining added nine points.
Colton trailed in the fourth quarter before mounting a rally which culminated in a three-pointer from Schultheis with 1:40 left to help hold off the Australians.
Garfield/Palouse 49, Lakeside 37
Arrasmith led the Vikings with 16 points and 13 rebounds in their season opener against non-league Lakeside (Idaho) Dec. 1. Griner added 13 points and 16 rebounds while Kenzi Pederson scored 10. Jean Askins had six steals.

Colton 39
Reece Chadwick led the Wildcats in a road loss with 17 points while Matt Wolf added nine. Parker Druffel scored eight as the Wildcats dropped to 0-2.
Tenison Woods Academy 86,
Colton 60
Colton dropped its Dec. 1 opener at home to a team from Mount Gambier of South Australia.
Led by Parker Druffel, Matt Wolf and Brady Stout, the Wildcats came up short in their first game of the year.
Lakeside 58, Garfield/Palouse 52
Freshman point guard Austin Jones led the Vikings with 19 points in a loss at Garfield Middle School. Senior guard Daniel Orfe scored nine points and Caden Sanderson and Ely Hawkins both had eight rebounds. Lakeside came from the Plummer-Worley area of Idaho.
