Bulldogs to face Dragons after WV split

Colfax girls will travel for a big early clash with St. George’s Dragons Friday after booking a split last Thursday and Friday at the West Valley Christmas Classic.

The Bulldogs Thursday were defeated 74-63 by a LaSalle Lightning team which got off to a fast start in the first quarter and managed to fend off the Bulldogs for most of the balance of the game. LaSalle led 24-16 after the first quarter and still had a 42-38 edge at the break.

LaSalle plays in the state’s A division and was a first-day qualifier in the A title playoffs last year. Coach Corey Baerlocher noted 28 Bulldog turnovers took a toll in the first game at West Valley.

Senior Carmen Gfeller scored season-high 36 points against the Lightning. Gfeller, who also booked 12 rebounds, hit 14 buckets from the field.

Friday, the Bulldogs pulled away from the host team, West Valley, for a 60-47 win with Gfeller dropping in another 32 points for a total of 68 beans in the two-day Christmas show. She also had 13 of the Bulldogs’ rebounds.

Piper Cai, also a senior, hit 11 for Colfax against the Eagles who play in the state’s 2A division,

Coach Baerlocher hopes the win over West Valley will provide the Bulldogs with a little traction when they travel to St. George’s Friday.

The Bulldogs, who were tripped by Davenport in the last NE round before the Christmas break, will take an 8-2 record to St. George’s

The last matchup between Colfax and St. George’s was in an elimination round of last years 2B state tourney in Spokane. The Dragons posted a 10-point win and went on to finish sixth..

That state action came after Colfax which was defeated by Davenport in the quarter-final round. The Gorillas went on to take their first state title win since 1993.

St. George’s last year graduated all leaguer Hailey Hagashi and Allison Day.
