Oakesdale girls face Colton Friday at home

Oakesdale's Logan Reed takes the ball up the floor against Sydney Watko of Pomeroy Jan. 6.

A big game looms Friday at home for the Oakesdale girls.

Colton will arrive with an 11-1overall record, 6-0 in league for a matchup which Oakesdale may need to win to climb into the top two in league after a loss to Garfield-Palouse Dec. 8 and Pomeroy last Saturday, Jan. 6.

In that game, the Nighthawks led 22-19 at halftime, then scored no points in the third quarter, losing 41-36.

“The third quarter, that was the game for us right there,” said Oakesdale coach Dan Brown,

Pomeroy’s (10-2, 5-1) Maddy Dixon and Emma Severs both scored 10 points while Sydney Watko added seven. Logan Reed paced Oakesdale with 15 points and Emma Perry had 10.

Over Christmas break, the Nighthawks (10-2, 3-2) beat Riverside at Chattaroy 43-13 followed by a 57-11 home win over Dayton and a 48-40 league win over Touchet. Starting January, Oakesdale played non-league Inchellium at Spokane, winning 56-48.

Non-league play is now complete.

“Thank God it’s over,” said Brown, the former Tekoa-Oakesdale leader who took over from Ken Lindgren this year. “Don’t have to travel as far, get on a school bus for as long,” he said.

His two Perrys, two Reeds and a Shrope team has a starting five of two sets of sisters – junior Logan Reed and freshman LouEllen, and senior Emma Perry and sophomore Lizzie. Senior Madison Shrope completes the lineup.

Logan, a forward, is Oakesdale’s leading scorer and rebounder. The roster is now without senior Anne Hockett, a starter at forward last year, who played in the first two games of 2017-18 before going down for the season with a nagging calf issue.

Overall, Brown indicated he is happy with the team’s results so far.

“We beat the teams we should’ve probably and lost to the teams that could’ve gone either way,” he said.

Now looking at matching up with Colton, Oakesdale has a chance to get back among the top spots in the Southeast 1B.

“Colton is right there where they usually are,” said Brown. “They’re not blowing as many teams out but they are as good as they were last year.”

In March 2017, Colton and Oakesdale entered the state tournament as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, before the Oakesdale lost in the quarterfinals and Colton lost in the semifinals. Both teams then dominated their next opponent to finish third and fourth.
