Colton outlasts Pomeroy 49-48

Senior forward Katie Arrasmith of Gar/Pal, a fourth-year starter, works against St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse Jan. 13.

Last year they fought it out in a memorable District Nine championship game in Colfax before Colton won to advance to the state sub-tournament. Pomeroy lost the next day to Oakesdale and their season ended.

Nearing a year later, with four remaining games in the 2017-18 regular season, Pomeroy and the Wildcats clashed at Colton Jan. 19, the hosts winning 49-48.

Abby Kelly made two free throws with five seconds left to lift the Wildcats to victory.

She went to the line after an over-the-back call against Pomeroy’s Maddy Dixon. Leading up to the play, the Pirates inbounded with 19 seconds on the clock. Alyssa Wolf drove the right side of the key and took a short jump shot. The ball bounced out and Dixon came down with the rebound. She missed the putback and a whistle blew as she went up with Kelly after the ball.

Kelly’s two free throws topped a rally for Colton (16-1, 8-0), coming back from 12 points down in the third quarter.

Emily Schultheis scored 17 points to lead Colton in the game while Kelly scored 10.

Syndey Watko led Pomeory (13-4, 7-2) with 16 points, Emma Severs had 13 and Sydney Smith 12.

While Colton and Pomeroy hold the top two spots in league, Oakesdale (13-3, 5-3) and Gar/Pal (10-5, 5-4) vie for third.

Pomeroy will play at Gar/Pal Friday, Jan. 26 while Oakesdale hosts Touchet. Colton travels to St. John to play St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse. On Saturday, Jan. 27, Oakesdale plays at Pomeroy, S.J.E.L. goes to Touchet and Waitsburg plays at Colton.
