Sixty-two steers competed in the Palouse Empire Fair beef carcass contest.
Grace Morris of Pullman and Colton Pfaff of Garfield tied for grand champion, and each received $500 and a championship jacket.
Cassidi Shindler of Colfax and Payson Griner of Palouse tied for reserve champion, and each received $350 and a reserve champion jacket.
Both of the champion carcasses graded prime and had a yield grade of three.
Both reserve champion carcasses had a choice quality grade and a yield grade of one.
Average live weight of all steers was 1,390 pounds and the average hot carcass weight of all steers was 827 pounds.
Sixty-nine percent were yield grade one and two, and 71 percent had a quality grade of choice or prime.
Sponsors of the contest included Simplot, AgriBeef, Tyson, Bar R Cattle Company, the Palouse Empire Fair and Sales Committee and the Whitman County Cattlemen.
Winners were announced at the WSU Meat Science Laboratory.
