It is Colton and Pomeroy again in the District Nine championship game, the two teams who were separated by a point the last time they played, 49-48, and who played a memorable fight a year ago in the title game.
Last year at Colfax, Pomeroy 2017 graduate Kacey Halbert pushed her team to push Colton but the Wildcats held them off to win the championship. Pomeroy then dropped to the second-place game and lost to Oakesdale, ending their season.
The Wildcats went on to play at state and lost a game, something that had not happened in nine years, the girls finishing third in state. A record streak of eight consecutive state 1B championships was broken. This year, the sense of mission is clear for a team that is older, more experienced, now a core of juniors led by Dakota Patchen, Jordyn Moerhle and Emily Schultheis.
Oakesdale 57, Touchet 56
Logan Reed made one of two free throws with eight seconds remaining Monday in Walla Walla to hold off Touchet in an elimination game. Reed finished with 37 points to send the Nighthawks to meet Garfield/Palouse Friday at 3 p.m., back at Walla Walla Community College. The winner will advance to the District Nine second-place game Saturday for a last chance to make the state sub-tournament.
Lizzie Perry added 10 points in Oakesdale’s win over Touchet.
Gar/Pal and Oakesale will meet again after splitting their two games in the regular season.
Colton 71, Garfield/Palouse 31
The Vikings girls traveled to Colton for a second round District Nine tournament game and the Wildcats advanced. Emily Schultheis led with 19 points while Rylee Vining scored 15 and Jordyn Moehrle 14. Katie Arrasmith had 12 points for Gar/Pal.
Garfield/Palouse 49, St. John/ Endicott/LaCrosse 35
Senior and four-year starter Katie Arrasmith scored 33 points at Walla Walla Community College Monday to help Gar/Pal keep their season alive, eliminating the Eagles in the loser-out game. Arrasmith and her team advanced to play Reed and Oakesdale Friday.
Oakesdale sophomore Lizzie Perry pushes the ball up the floor in a 57-56 win over Touchet Monday in Walla Walla. The victory kept Oakesdale's season alive.
