Serving Whitman County since 1877

Letters: Feb. 22, 2018

Appreciations

On behalf of all of us at Whitman County Library, I want to express our sincere appreciation to local voters for restoring the library’s tax levy rate. I also want to thank the many businesses and individuals who’ve donated and volunteered over the years. We are honored to serve you from 14 countywide locations, online and through outreach programming, but it definitely wouldn’t be possible without generous supporters like you.

Thank you for helping WCL make a positive difference in our communities and in the lives of the people we serve.

Whitman County Library, Director

Mr. Gerald Ray, please write back and explain to Gazette readers how your life has been made worse as a result of having 329 languages spoken within our borders (Feb. 15, 2018.)

To serve

Our small Whitman County unincorporated, and even some incorporated, towns have a problem with abandoned, non-registered motor vehicles. This problem has been discussed with the county commissioners frequently.

The response by Art Swannack was it is a community problem and the county has no authority to press individuals to rid themselves of junk and vehicles. Yet, no one in the communities is in a position to enforce standards upon individuals.

To help the county gain knowledge of its responsibility, an ordinance developed by a neighboring county was provided to the commission. County government certainly has the means to enforce such an ordinance. Between the sheriff, prosecutor, public works, health department and fire department, the problem could be solved.

Reference Spokane County zoning codes 14.300.100 and 14.618.300(5).
