Seniors meals . . . and more

Jeannette Solimine welcomes seniors to the new weekly lunch site at the Colfax pantry.

A full house showed up for the inaugural meal at the Council on Aging’s new home for its senior meals March 7 at the Colfax Food Pantry in the former Elk’s Lodge.

Attendees were able to get extra food from the pantry’s offerings after the meal.

Jeannette Solimine greeted those at the five full tables and introduced Billy Swank who sang a song to commemorate the event before the meal was served.

According to Paige Collins, COA executive director, it has been two years since they decided to move the meal site to the pantry. The cost was $72,000 with most of it going to get the kitchen up to code. She is still working on securing the funds for new tables and chairs.

To date COA has received $1,000 from Farm Credit Service and $750 from Alex McGregor. That leaves only $3,900 needed to buy the new seating.

Collins stated the goal is to double the amount of people who utilize the meal. For those who want to attend, but do not want to deal with the traffic, COA offers a door-to-door bus service to pick up attendees and return them home.
