Dahmen to host Cowboy performers

The Palouse Country Cowboy Poetry Association will present their spring performance at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. It will be a St. Patrick’s Day performance. The group has been performing twice a year since the barn opened.

Performing will be Dave Nordquist, Orvil Sears, Slim Dewitt, Gene Buchholtz, Jim Aasen, Hal Olson, Donna Gwinn, Eric Larson and John Stelzer.

Palouse Country Cowboy Poetry Association was formed in 1995 with seven members. Today there are about 40 members, both cowboy poets and musicians, coming from all over the Palouse.

Admission will be $10.

WWI sessions slated at library

Richard Sola, a regional history instructor for Spokane Community College, will teach a special four-session class about the important role the Palouse played in the First World War, even before the U.S. entered the conflict in April, 1917. Discover how Spokane changed, practically overnight, with women entering the work force, food rationing, Victory Gardens, a universal draft, censorship and the search for spies and subversives.

Especially important was the need to protect from sabotage the local production of wheat, timber and minerals - all essential components of the war effort

The classes will be at the Colfax Library on the four Tuesdays in April 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. This is ACT 2 class #4473 from Community Colleges of Spokane. The cost of the class is $25. Register by calling 509-279-6030.

'Cinderella' slated at Tekoa's Empire

The Inland Empire Theatre Company, based in Rosalia, will present a kids musical of Disney's “Cinderella” at Tekoa's Empire Theatre March 17-18.

The production is directed by Rosalia High School senior Colin Pittman, with a cast of Tekoa and Rosalia youth from kindergarten to 12th grade.

The Inland Empire Theatre Co., formed by Pittman and former Rosalia mayor Nanette Konishi, put on its first play last year, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

The Saturday show is at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $7 with kids under 5 free.

Museum soup social

Oakesdale Historical Society's next museum soup social will be March 18 at the museum. The meal will be soup, bread and dessert served from 11:30 a.m until 1 p.m. Admission will be by donation, according to Gail Parsons, society member.

Easter events set at Rosalia

An Easter egg hunt will be at Rosalia school at noon Saturday, March 31. Breakfast and visits with the Easter Bunny will be from 8 until 11:30 a.m. at the Rosalia Methodist Church. Both events are sponsored by the Lion's Club.

Rosalia Methodist Church will have a Good Friday community worship service March 30 at 7 p.m.

An Easter Sunday sunrise service will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Steptoe Battlefield Monument. Breakfast will follow the sunrise service at the Rosalia Methodist Church. A 10 a.m. Easter worship service will follow at the church.

March Cup O' Joe

The March 6 Cup O' Joe meeting brought a full house to Columbia Bank in Pullman. The topic of interest was small business ecosystem resources for business start and growth. The meeting was hosted by Sarah McKnight, Whitman County Director for the Southeast Washington Economic Development Association.

Yoga class

set at Dahmen

A Yoga/Qi Gong/ Mindful Meditation day-long immersion workshop will be March 21 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. A lunch will be included.

Instructor Elene Johnston's early experience with qi gong was while living in China.

All of the poses and qi gong practices can be modified to fit any fitness level. The class is for students ages 18-88. Please bring a yoga mat and pair of socks. The class will have a maximum of 35 students.

Cost will be $40 and participants are asked to register by March 17.

STEM programs at Neill Library

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to participate in a STEM Seedling program at Neill Public Library in Pullman Monday, March 19, from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Each weekly STEM program will be planned and facilitated by WSU students Haley Didway and Maura Yanes. This week’s program about “Space” will include hands-on activities for attendees. Free snacks will be provided.

Youth ages 12 to 17 are invited to participate in a STEM program for teens at Neill library Wednesday, March 21, from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Each weekly STEM program will be planned and facilitated by Didway and Yanes. This week’s program is about “Forensics.”

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Rosalia Garden Club

The club met March 7 at the home of Roseanna Hester who hosted members with a 1 p.m. dessert.

Cheryl Gillespie talked on "How to enter a National Garden Club Flower Show" with the new Petite Designs 12 inches and smaller.

A design larger than 12 inches is considered a Standard Floral Design.

Youth Poster Chairman Terrie Tucker presented the Rosalia Grade School butterfly posters. Judged by members, the posters have been submitted to the state contest in Olympia and the winners will be announced in June.

In April the club will tour the Barr-Tech composting facility near Tyler. The company recently donated their product to Rosalia Garden Club to be used in the mini-park.

Pullman League of Women Voters will host new city council members Brandon Chapman and Dan Records at their noon brown bag meeting today Thursday, March 15, noon until 1 p.m. at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, 525 NE Campus Avenue. Free parking will be available.
