Bulldog baseball launches with 6 title starters back

Colfax baseball season will launch with a lot of players back from last year’s championship season and a new head coach on the sidelines. The new coach isn’t exactly a stranger: Scotty Parrish, who was an assistant to his dad, Coach Mike Parrish, for nine years, has moved up to the top spot.

Scotty Parrish served as an assistant coach in two stints for a total of nine years at Colfax going back to the 2007 season. A 2001 Colfax grad, he played college ball at Big Bend and Central Washington University.

Coach Mike Parrish stepped down last year after leading the Bulldogs to a state 2B title at Wheeler Field in Centralia. The Bulldog team last year rolled up a 23-1 record on the way to the state title.

Coach Mike Parrish was head coach at Colfax for 21 years and served as a jayvee coach for six years.

During his years as coach he worked with a group of dedicated volunteers in the development of the McDonald Park baseball and softball complex.

Scotty Parrish reports he has six starters back from last year’s title run. The turnout for the season totals 33 players with 11 freshmen joining the ranks.

Graduating off last year’s title team were pitcher Danny Robinson, who received the league’s MVP honors last year, Logan Gingerich, Matt Sharp, Terrell Webb and Hunter Mosebar.

Senior starters back for another season include Parker Huber, Kyle Appel and Cal Gregory who were named as all-league players last year as juniors. Huber was the number-two pitcher for the team behind Robinson and Gregory was catcher for the club and pitched. Appel, an infielder, was one of the team leaders in hitting.

Nate Akesson, named for all-league honors as a sophomore, will be back in the infield and could see time on the mound.

Other juniors back from the title year are Blake Bodey, Kieron Anderson, Evan Henning, Mason Miller and Kelan Becker. Cameron Hiatt is also a junior on the club.

Coach Parrish said one of the early season tasks will be to check out the pitching on the roster to get a rotation down for the league campaign.

The Bulldogs Saturday used six different pitchers in a jamboree at Clarkston which matched them up against Moscow and Clarkston teams for three innings each.

The season will officially launch Friday at the Asotin Jamboree with the Bulldogs playing against Weiser, Idaho, at 11 a.m. and Grangeville, Idaho, at 1:30.
