Tayma Vanek wins Colfax DYW

Tayma Vanek was named winner of the Distinguished Young Woman contest at Colfax High School Saturday night. She was among seven CHS junior girls in the competition which had a “Back to the Future” theme. Elizabeth Harwood was named first alternate, and Madi Cox was named second alternate.

The daughter of Todd and Amy Vanek, Tayma received a $1,000 scholarship. She placed second in the talent and scholarship parts of the competition.

Vanek will represent Colfax in the state DYW competition this summer.

MaKenna Roberts, who did a rendition of the “Barbie” dance, won the talent competition, and Jenna Harwood won the scholastic award.

Elizabeth Harwood won the self expression and judge’s interview parts of the competition. Casey Fulfs was second in self expression, and Cox was second in the interview.

Cox won the fitness competition, and Abigail Huber placed second.

Jenna Harwood also won the spirit award.

Last year’s DYW winners, Jantzen Larsen, Abbie Miller and Sara Whelchel, were featured in the “Back to the Future” program with time stops for the 1980s, 1950s, and the 1920s. Cast members Carson Cloaninger, Leo Huels and Dakota Hall greeted them at each stop.

Dean Ellis portrayed “Doc,” the operator of the time machine. He also served as emcee and announced the winners at the end of the program.

Casey Fulfs opened the talent competition with a tap dance routine.

MaKenna Roberts won the talent portion of the competition with her dance routine to Barbie.

Jenna Harwood played a piano solo for her talent.

Leo Huels, Dakota Hall and Carson Cloaninger gave a vocal rendition of a 1950s classic to portray the decade.

Abigail Huber played a flute solo for her talent entry in the talent competition.
