St. John fair opens today

St. John Community Fair and Stock Show opens for viewing today at the fairground in St. John. Thursday is the last day for entries with food, sewing, adult arts and crafts, photography and flower entries due between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Livestock entries are set to come in from 12 to 5 p.m. with judging of the home ec building going on from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Cook Shack also opens today at 11 a.m. and will be open during the rest of the regularly scheduled fair events. Friday is show day for most livestock with fitting and showing classes beginning at 10 a.m. and conformation classes at 1 p.m. Sheep, goats, swine, beef, chickens and rabbits will be on display, as well as horses which will show on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m., breaking for the parade, and picking back up at 1:30 p.m.

The community fair parade Saturday is set for 12 p.m. on Front Street. Back at the show arena at 1 p.m. will be games and stick horse rodeo following awards presentations and raffle drawings.

Also on Saturday will be the 40th running of the Hog Jog, a five-mile fun run beginning at the city park. To help inspire youth and the running-disinclined, there will also be one- and two-mile courses. Registration and sign-in is from 7 to 8 a.m. with starting pistol firing at 8:30 for all races. For parents in the five-mile event, there will be child care available for kids doing the shorter distances.

Sunday at the fairground sees the return of Cowboy Church service at 9 a.m. The Pig Putt tees off at 10 a.m. at the St. John Golf and Country Club with registration from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Animals can be taken from the fair Saturday after 5 p.m. and other exhibits Sunday between 2 and 5 p.m.
