The Colton softball team enters the 1B road to state this weekend with two games at Medical Lake.
The No. 1 seed from District 9, the Wildcats will meet Sunnyside Christian at 2 p.m., the no. 4 seed from District 7.
Win or lose, Colton will play again at 4 p.m. the same day.
If they win both games, they advance to a state seeding game next Saturday, May 19, also at Medical Lake.
Colton takes a 17-1 record into the playoffs (9-0 in league), a team that has won how many district championships under coach Brad Nilson?
“I don’t know, I don’t count those,” said Nilson, who has won seven state championships with Colton since 2007.
The 2018 team prepares this week with a re-scheduled non-league game at 2B Colfax Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m. It’s part of a week Colton will be without five players on certain days due to the state FFA convention in Pullman.
“If you’re not flexible, you’re not a coach in the spring,” Nilson said.
Colton has no seniors, with many players returning from last year’s team which took third in state. This season Colton’s quest to make it to state in Yakima may be more uncertain as Nilson has had less to gauge with.
“Our league is usually the strong league. Our league is weak,” he said.
Is the coach nervous at this time of year?
“I always worry. The longer you’ve been in it, the more reasons there are to worry about,” Nilson said.
