Shirley Sellers

Mar. 20, 1926 - Sept. 25, 2018

Shirley Mae Sellers, 92, passed away peacefully at the CityView Adult Family Home in Colfax on September 25, 2018.

A vigil service will be held Monday, October 1st, at 7:00 pm, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colfax. Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, October 2nd, at 10:30, also at the church. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery.

Shirley was born March 20, 1926 in Aberdeen, Washington, to James and Olympe Regimbal Moreland. She grew up in Moxee, Washington, along with three brothers. Shirley graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Yakima, Washington, in 1943. She attended Seattle University and earned a bachelor's degree in dietetics. Shirley also completed a second bachelor's degree in education from Central Washington University, with additional coursework at the University of Washington.

She married a friend of one of her brothers, Benjamin F. Sellers, in Yakima in August 1949. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Susan and Nancy. The Sellers made their home in Yakima where Shirley worked as a registered dietician at St. Elizabeth Hospital. After Shirley's marriage ended, she worked hard as a single mother to raise her two daughters. She taught home economics at Wilson Junior High in Yakima for 12 years in the 1950's and 60's. During her teaching years, she was a member of the local home economics teachers association and she liked to keep in touch with her high school and college friends.

She was a devout Catholic her entire life. In 2014 she was honored by the American Dietetic Association for 65 years of membership. An avid reader, she also found special joy in creating a voluminous family history that took two years to complete. She moved to Bremerton, Washington, in the 1990's and worked as a consulting dietician until she was 70. In 2005, Shirley moved to Colfax. She attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colfax.

She is survived by her two daughters and their families, Susan (Scott) Hallett of Colfax and Nancy (Skip) Heine of Bremerton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and by her brother, Fr. Gordon Moreland, S.J. of Orange, Calif. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Jim and Frank. The family suggests that memorial gifts in her memory be given to St. Patrick's Parish or to the Jesuits at jesuitswest.org. On-line guest book is at http://www.bruningfuneralhome.com
