Awards rite marks end to Bulldog football season

The Colfax football season, which started with a long road trip to Cathlamet to play Wakiakum on a non-league opener, came to a close Thursday with a revised format for season-end awards.

Between the two dates, Colfax rolled up a 4-5 record, and again finished one win short of a state playoff slot.

Coach Mike Morgan Thursday pointed out four of the teams who defeated Colfax during the season wound up in state playoff action. That included Heppner which landed in the Oregon playoffs. Heppner, the smallest school playing 11-man football in Oregon, defeated Colfax in the home opener here.

Under the new format which split the big NE League to north and south divisions, Colfax played four non-leaguers before starting the campaign on the south side. They took wins over the LRS Broncos and Liberty, lost to Asotin and then lost to Reardan in a pivotal game which put them in the number-three slot for the crossover round.

Colfax then traveled to Chewelah for the playoff, and the season ended there.

Chewelah, Reardan and Northwest Christian wound up with the three NE berths in the state show and all were out of the running after the quarter final round.

State 2B football ended Friday at the Tacoma Dome where Napavine posted a 34-25 win over Kalama in the title game.

Colfax team members, coaches, cheerleaders and parents Thursday assembled in the high school auditorium for awards presentations and then went to the cafeteria for cake and ice cream.

Seniors Augie Allenbach, Blake Bodey, Mason Miller and Gabe Ahmann received team captain awards. Other seniors on the team were Cameron Hiatt, Dakota Hall, Chayne Aeschliman and Isaiah Buri.

Special awards for varsity went to Layne Gingerich, most improved; Ahmann, most inspirational; Allenbach, most valuable teammate; Caden Brown, scholastic award, and Jacob Brown, coaches' award.

For the undefeated junior varsity team, Brandon Lustig was named most improved and Anthony Becker was named for the inspirational, most valuable teammate and scout team awards.

The jayvee team this year campaigned with just 12 players on the roster.
