Colfax girls top Dragons to snap 0-3 start on season

Colfax girls Saturday pegged an early lead over the St. George's Dragons and fought off a comeback from the guests to finish with their first win of the season Saturday in the home court. The Bulldogs prevailed 56-50 after the Dragon team cranked it up for one last run in the fourth quarter.

The home win in a non-league game puts Colfax at 1-3 with the LRS Broncos slated to be here Friday night to open up league play.

The speedy Colfax team zapped to a 6-0 lead at the start of Saturday's home game, but the Dragons battled back with Cambrie Rickard hitting a three-pointer at the end of the first quarter to knot it up at 13-13.

Colfax sophomore Kierstyn York then went on a scoring spree under the bucket in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs took off. They led 27-19 midway through the quarter with Asher Cai topping the run by stealing the ball on a Dragons' baseline in-bound play and dropping a bucket backwards over her shoulder.

St. George's rallied back and finished within three points, 36-39, at the half.

It went to 47-39 after three quarters and finished at 56-50.

St. George's lost junior veteran Lydia Berquist to five fouls late in the game after she was called for her third foul in the second quarter. They also lost Abby Jones on the foul count.

York finished with 27 points.

Friday night the Bulldogs played the Columbia Coyotes at Burbank, and they cooked a 22-16 lead at the half, but lost ground in the last two quarters. The Bulldogs hit just five beans in the fourth frame, and Columbia pulled out a 40-37 win to send the Bulldogs home with a 0-3 record.

York hit 12 against the Coyotes, and Cai hit nine points, pulled down six rebounds and booked three steals.

Coach Cory Baerlocher noted the Bulldogs hit just one shot out of 15 attempts in the last quarter while the Coyotes pulled out the home win. Colfax hit just one three-point shot in the game.

Colfax will host the LRS Broncos Friday in the first round of the NE-South league run. The Broncos will arrive after pegging a 60-34 win over Wilbur-Crest in a non-leaguer Saturday night.

Saturday, Colfax will visit Asotin and play a Panther team which was dropped 66-29 Tuesday by Oakesdale in another non-leaguer.
