Board seeks input: Junk cars, trash, roads slated for Steptoe meet

A special meeting will be in the Steptoe Elementary School cafeteria from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 4 to review a petition covering zoning and ordinances, road conditions, non-running vehicles, trash and garbage in yards. The petition requests the commissioners to enact an ordinance stating specific activities residents are not to engage in.

When asked whether they wanted to view a presentation provided by Kirk Suess, the concern arose that pictures viewed could cause potential embarrassment for private landowners.

Commissioner Michael Largent commented on his desire to hear testimonies from concerned citizens and for people to be speaking on their own behalf.

“We would be happy to take any submission from anybody on this topic, but the purpose of the Steptoe meeting is to let the residents personally present their issues. If people want to provide written testimony or pictures they are free to do so, but we won’t necessarily present those at the meeting,” Largent said.

Any ordinance that would arise from this meeting would affect not just Steptoe, but county-wide rural and unincorporated areas.

Commissioner Dean Kinzer commented on his disinterest in the meeting being turned into a campaign.

Largent emphasized that this is one more venue, as they go over the topics.

“I would suggest we’re going to present this as a meeting, because it’s the board of county commissioners who are reviewing this matter,” said Largent. “If anybody wants to send a letter, pictures, thoughts; we will certainly be happy to review that as part of our considerations.”

Any such correspondents can be sent to the commissioners’ office.
