Selway rescinds zone request

Selway Holdings, LLC, Pullman, notified the county planning department at 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday, Feb. 27, that they were withdrawing their application for a zone change from agricultural to light industrial on Country Club Road.

Subsequently, the scheduled meeting for commissioners to consider the application set for Monday at 11:30 a.m. was cancelled.

“No public comment at this time,” said Paul Mihalyov, co-founder of Dewey Scientific, a company founded Jan. 1 by two WSU alumni from the molecular plant sciences department, which was to lease land for a marijuana growing, processing and research facility.

The process began with a request by Selway Holdings, LLC, to switch an agricultural zone just south of Pullman to light industrial.

The zone change request was first heard by the county planning commission, which then sent the matter to county commissioners recommending they allow it.

Opposition since rose against it, leading to a packed commissioner’s chamber Feb. 19 at their regular meeting, which included an agenda item to set a public meeting date and time on the Selway zone request.

Public comment (while not on the agenda) was allowed by Art Swannack, commissioners’ president.

A week later, on Monday, Feb. 25, another standing-room only crowd filled commissioners’ chambers to listen to Denis Tracy advise Swannack, Dean Kinzer and Michael Largent of rules regarding the possibility of putting a moratorium on marijuana activities.

The commissioners asked for Tracy’s input after hearing the public feedback the week before.

Two days later, Selway rescinded its zone change application.
