Serving Whitman County since 1877
The Natural Resources Conservation Services at the USDA Service Center in Colfax has a new face. Stephen Johnson is Whitman County's new resource conservationist, filling in a position that has been vacant for more than a year. Johnson joined the NRCS in a move from the Palouse Conservation District.
While working in the Palouse Conservation District, Johnson was a planner who worked with farmers.
"Ultimately, I'm just excited to step into this new position," said Johnson. He is looking forward to meeting farmers and helping people. Johnson feels that with his new position he can have a bigger impact.
"We are here as a community resource," said Johnson. "I'd love to have people stop by to give me some feedback, positive and negative," he said.
Johnson moved from the district agency to the federal agency after living in Whitman County for two years with his wife and their 10-month-old daughter, Callie. Johnson's wife is a fourth generation native of the Palouse. They have grandparents living nearby as well.
Two years ago, Johnson moved here from the Bitterroot Valley near Missoula, Mont., where he was the farm manager for Montana University's research farm.
Johnson had graduated from WSU before going to grad school at Montana University.
Johnson's wife works with the Palouse Conservation District in education outreach.
"This area is definitely important to us," said Johnson.
As a resource conservationist, he can now help folks county-wide, instead of only within a quarter of the county. His assistance management includes nutrient management and providing technical guidance and financial help. He has a strong customer service focus and a big desire to help.
