Buttercups found

Reed, 11, and Sonia Widman, 8, found the first buttercups in Whitman County March 16 on their property near Rosalia. The Widmans received the annual $1 award each from Gazette publisher Gordon Forgey. The family has claimed the prize for the past 10 years. Before the Widmans, the late Mildred Riley of Riley's River Ranch at Central Ferry on the Snake River claimed the prize for many years. It is unknown how long it's been going. It was well established by the time Forgey came to the Gazette in 1985.
