It is not over yet

The investigation into the Trump campaign and presidency was concluded last week by special counsel Robert Mueller. A brief summary of this investigation has been released. The full report has not.

The White House claims total vindication of the charges. The Democrats are seeing this as just the beginning and will be conducting their own investigations. All this is aside from the various cases working their way through the courts.

Now despite all the accusations of a political witch hunt and counter claims of “collusion” and obstruction, the real politics begins.

This will naturally lead to more speculation, more theories and more unbridled, if not unhinged, opinions.

Most serious, the continuing struggles will help to fan the partisan flames sweeping the country. The country is already split. The country is already forming divisions that will be a long time in mending.

After the close of Mueller’s investigation, Representative Cathy McMorris Rogers said in a statement, it is time to get back to the business of important issues. This overlooks what is about to come and how serious some of the unresolved allegations against the administration are.

Few Democrats consider investigations of the president over. They will delve deeper into what they consider vital questions. Congressional hearings will not quickly–if ever–come to bipartisan conclusions. The courts will continue to operate on their own time table.

Perhaps the only aspect of all this that gets widespread support is the full release of the Mueller report. Should it not be released by the justice department, then an entirely new round of conflict will be birthed.

The frightening aspect is that both parties are looking for revenge. The Republicans want to investigate Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama and a variety of issues they say were buried during the 2016 election campaign, including the reasons for the special counsel investigation. They are also roundly assaulting the media. The Democrats are intent on showing illegal activity on the part of the president and his associates.

The first round of this saga was political. This second round will be a matter of political revenge. Both parties want to destroy the other.

The danger is that the country could suffer irreparable collateral damage.
