Bulldog baseball team tops Broncos, Dragons

Colfax baseball players added the wins to their season ledger during the week with a power pair of wins over the LRS Broncos Friday on the Bailey-Brayton turf at WSU, and a big win over St. George's Monday on the grid at Whitworth.

The wins leave the bulldogs at 4-1 on the new season with a league double booked with Reardan here Friday.

Friday's double with the Broncos actually extended close to the 9 p.m. mark after the two varsity teams got off to a late start because the Colfax and Liberty jayvees played to a 16-16 tie after getting a 1 p.m. start on the WSU field.

Colfax varsity defeated the Broncos in the opener Friday with a 14-0 shutout. Nate Akesson allowed one hit over the first four innings, and Isaiah Buri kept the lid on in the fifth inning.

Akesson fanned 10 Bronco batters over his four innings of work.

Bryce Kelly took the loss for the Broncos, and Jay Harder went to the mound for the Broncos in the third inning.

Colfax totaled nine hits in the opener with Kolby Sisk and Layne Gingerich each tagging two hits. Evan Henning tripled and Nate Akesson and Gingerich each had a double.

The second game turned out to be a marathon with the Bulldogs at one point in a 2-9 hole before scoring six runs in the seventh inning to erase the Bronco lead. Final score was 15-12.

Nate Akesson was rapped a bases clearing triple to tie it up at 9-9.

The Broncos bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Colfax scored six runs in the last-chance seventh.

Coach Scotty Parrish put Nate Akesson back on the mound inning to protect the late lead in the seventh.

LRS was the home team for the double bill which was originally booked at Ritzville.

Colfax had nine hits with Nate Akesson rapping two triples, and Gingerich hitting one triple. Kelan Becker and Eric Akesson each had a double.

Gingerich pitched into the fourth inning. Kelan Becker, Blake Bodey and Nate Akesson each pitched in relief as the clock approached 9 p.m. and the temperature dropped.

Bodey, a senior, was credited for the win because the Bulldogs took the lead when he was on the mound.

Monday, Colfax defeated St. George's 6-3 on Whitworth's Merkel field.

Bodey pitched into the fifth inning to take the win, and Becker pitched the balance of the game. Becker shut down a rally threat by the Dragons in the fifth.

Shut out for the first three innings by the Dragons' 6-6 senior starter Xander Workmen, the Bulldogs roughed up SG reliever Nick Watkins to score with four runs in the fourth inning.

St. George's came back to score three runs in the fifth inning, but they were shut down for the balance of the game.

Colfax totaled nine hits with Nate Akesson hitting a double and single.

Gingerich and Eric Akesson each had two hits.

Also getting raps for the Bulldogs were Bodey, Mason Miller and Becker.

Jason Spackman doubled and singled to lead the SG bats. Workmen also tagged a double for SG.
