Colfax Bulldog girls capped off the hoop season Monday night with the annual sports banquet. The awards and dinner finished winter campaign which saw a young and speedy Colfax team pick up wins, build a lot of steam late in the league, run and battle to within one win to getting into the final state rounds.
The Bulldogs were knocked out of the title bracket in the district run at West Valley by Liberty, and then stopped by Davenport in the match for the last ticket out of the West Valley show to state.
Coach Corey Baerlocher Monday night said they missed returning to the state show. He said he believed the Bulldogs could have brought home a trophy if they had advanced to the the final three state nights.
The Bulldogs put the season together after five seniors starters graduated off the team which fought off Davenport to win state title in the 2018 show.
Colfax had just two seniors, Taylre Sakamoto-Howell and Rachel Brown in the lineup this year. They received captains awards at the end of the banquet.
Brown, the tallest player on an overall short team, had to finish out the year on the bench with an ankle injury.
Baerlocher noted Taylre Sakamoto-Howell picked up skills over her four years in the program and for her senior season advanced to the point where she seemed to just go through people.
Taylre also received the team's most inspirational award.
Junior Kaitlin Cornish, the fastest player on a fast team, received the Hustle award, and Perry Imler, a freshman, received the team most improved honor.
Asher Cai, also a freshman, was voted for the most valuable award.
Varsity awards also went to Averi Mackleit, Sydney Berquist, Hannah Baerlocher, Anni Cox, Kierstyn York, and Skylre Sakamoto-Howell and Shyah Antoine.
The Colfax varsity roster included four juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen, Cai and Baerlocher.
