Governor Jay Inslee is running for the presidency of the United States. He is one of the now 20 candidates from the Democratic party seeking the job.
So far, his candidacy is lost in the crowd of other hopefuls.
His main reason for running for the job is to bring awareness and changes to the arguments and policies on climate change.
He is not a one issue candidate but his main focus is on climate change and global warming.
Many agree with him, although a political divide about the issue splits the country. President Trump is a fervent denier of that the change is caused by human activities.
The scientific evidence is substantial that the climate is changing and will dramatically change the world and how people live in it. Evidence also strongly attaches the changes to human activity.
Reports abound about the rapid loss of glaciers and ice packs, the increasing intensity of extreme weather and rising sea levels. As common are reports of the difficulties certain populations are facing because of changes on land and in the oceans.
A recent report in the New Yorker magazine has even tied climate change to the crush of people seeking asylum in the United States.
Reportedly, Guatemala is suffering from devastating regional changes in its weather. Rains are more unpredictable causing crop loss, floods and draught. Supposedly, the changes are causing residents to escape the difficulties. The idea of climate refugees has been predicted for some time. Apparently, it is now a matter of fact.
The influx of immigrants at the southern border has long been blamed on violence in Central America and economic difficulties. Now, the number is reportedly being increased by climate refugees.
The predictions of the effect of the warming of the earth are dire and portends disastrous consequences.
At this point, many individuals, organizations and commercial enterprises are taking the threats of global warming as serious and life threatening. Political leaders are falling behind the consensus.
It is to Inslee’s credit that he has made climate change the center point of his campaign. It will not get him elected, but his efforts may help to get the warnings and the message to more people.
