1B baseball: Vikings beat Touchet, lose to Pomeroy

Playing Tuesday night against Touchet at Asotin (because of field conditions), the Garfield/Palouse baseball team won 15-5 to put their record at 4-1 for the season.

At bat, junior Blake Jones went 3-for-4 with a home run for Gar/Pal and five RBIs. Riley Pedersen, a senior, was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.

On the mound, the Vikings’ Ely Hawkins pitched the first two innings followed by freshman Kane Weiker, making his high school pitching debut. Weiker posted four strikeouts, allowed four hits with no walks and three unearned runs.

At bat, he hit an RBI-single to score two runs that ended the game in the fifth inning.

Jaxson Orr, another Gar/Pal freshman, went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In total, the team hit 13-of-31 for the game.

“I feel pretty good about that,” said Coach Mike Jones.

Pomeroy 3, Garfield/Palouse 0

In a home game converted to at-Pomeroy last Friday, April 12, also because of field conditions, the Garfield/Palouse baseball team got in a pitcher’s duel for five innings before Pomeroy took the game with three late runs.

Blake Jones pitched for Gar/Pal while Pomeroy veteran Jace Gwinn, a senior, threw for the Pirates.

It was 0-0 at the start of the sixth inning.

Jones gave up a walk, struck out the next batter and the runner stole second. After two passed balls, he scored.

In the bottom of the sixth, Gar/Pal down 1-0, the Vikings put a runner in scoring position but could not get him home.

In the top of the seventh, Jones reached the 90-pitch mark and Coach Jones replace him with Ely Hawkins, who allowed a hit and a walk. After two passed balls, Pomeroy scored two more runs to win the game.

Gwinn gave up one hit in total with no runs and 13 strikeouts. Jones also allowed one hit, with eight strikeouts and one unearned run.

“Unfortunately, we made a couple miscues that cost us,” said Coach Jones. “The kids battled and we had a chance.”

The Vikings are set to play again – in its latest revised schedule – at Pomeroy Saturday for a doubleheader, followed by a home doubleheader (at Garfield) April 23 against St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse.

Due to continuous wet conditions, Gar/Pal has not yet practiced on their home field – instead using its auxiliary gym in Palouse and, in the past week, taking fly balls on the football field and ground balls on the tennis courts.

The Vikings’ original 2019 baseball schedule may be found at the bottom of Athletic Director Scott Thompson’s shredder.
