The first part of asbestos removal at Colfax Junior-Senior High School was finished Monday.
“Construction is moving along, going great,” Jerry Pugh, superintendent, told the school board Monday night.
An asbestos abatement crew of 10 finished that morning in the auditorium.
“The cement is the cleanest cement you’ve ever seen,” Pugh said.
Abatement for the first half of phase one of construction is now complete – library, home economics room, auditorium and south second floor wing. The asbestos abatement work will resume for other parts of the building this summer.
To take out the asbestos so far, a crew sealed off all vents and ducts in a room they were to work in, with air tests conducted to be sure an area is secure.
Then workers in protective gear went as far as scraping off and hauling away asbestos glue which held up old chalkboards.
The work is part of a school remodeling project paid for by an $18.9 million bond passed by voters last year.
