Evans party brings a crowd

Friday, Kim and Cindy Pitts traveled to Boise to spend Easter weekend with daughter and family, Jen, Ryan, Kellen, Becket and Willa. The Pitts came back home Sunday.

Di and Larry Brink; John, Brandi and daughters Myla and Lexi Brink, Dusty, and Tom Phillips from St. John met to attend Sunday Easter worship services together. Afterwards, Tom joined Di and Larry for dinner. Lucky and Joan Myrick came to the Brink home for dessert later in the day.

Mark and Kathy Vogler had an Easter surprise. Ava Jean Vogler was born on Easter morning to Henry and Cari (Thompson) Vogler of Bellevue at seven pounds, six ounces. She joins brother, three-year-old Sam.

The Hooper Store held an over-flow crowd Friday for a “Farewell to Bill Evans” event. Evans had requested a party rather than a funeral. He was born in Prosser, WA on January 30, 1931 and died on April 13, 2019, in Colfax. He is survived by his wife, Della; three children, Scott, Shan Webley, and Joe; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Bill never met a stranger and was involved in many community activities, from the Palouse Empire Fair to Washington State High School Rodeo, director of the Pioneer Telephone Company and a million other interests. Many memories, laughs, and a few tears were shared.

Saturday, Karen Broeckel and Sharry Krom O’Hearne attended graveside services at Woodlawn Cemetery in Deer Park for former Winona/LaCrosse native and their classmate from the class of 1960, Doreen Knott Carlson. Doreen was born, with her twin Donna, Oct. 14, 1942, in Colfax to Robert and Anne Knott, and died March 27, 2019, in Spokane. Tom Mays, brother-in-law, officiated at the service which was attended by family, many Whitman County residents and other friends. She is survived by her husband Jim; daughters Stacy and Debbie (Eric); six grandchildren; two sisters, and a brother. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Theresa Johnson. Doreen was an active 4H leader for more than 20 years.

Karen Broeckel was a guest in the home of Greg and Gwen Nolan in Colfax for Easter dinner. Other guests included Jason Nolan, Mark and Carol Rubin, Jeanette Nolan, Patty Wieber, Matty Forrest, Bobby and Jamie Halbig and Evie, Ezra and Max, Pam Nolan Beasley, Zach Beasley and Austin Beasley.

Area residents are reminded that the public hearing for a use permit for the development of a commercial grain storage by McCoy Land Company at Dusty will be today, Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the Public Service Building in Colfax.
