Emily Katharina Alexander, 94, of Colfax passed away April 22, 2019, at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., Emily was born Oct. 16, 1924, in Baden-Baden, Germany, to Arthur and Karolina (Weber) Strach.
She grew up in Germany and attended a Catholic Boarding School. Following graduation from high school, Emily received her bachelors degree from the University of Leipzig in Leipzig, Germany.
She married Hildegard Alexander in 1948 and began raising the family. It was in March of 1950 that they moved to the United States, living throughout the country during his service in the U.S. Army. Emily worked as a court reporter for the U.S. Government during WWII. Following Hildegard’s honorable discharge from the Army they operated several service stations in the Tacoma, Wash., area.
Emily and Hildegard were later divorced. Emily worked her entire life and raised her family. She spent time in the real estate industry and was a bookkeeper and accountant for several different businesses until her retirement. Spending time with her family was always important to her.
Emily was fluent in five different languages and was a member of the Catholic Church. She loved flowers, gardening and crocheting Afghans, served others her entire life and dabbled in all types of crafts. Emily moved to Colfax, Wash., a little over three years ago to live with her daughter and family.
She is survived by her daughters, Carmen (Blake) Heaton of Colfax, Diana and Gale, her son, Richard Alexander; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents, a brother and one daughter, Belinda Alexander, preceded her in death. No public services are being planned. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax, WA.
