The Colfax school board took in its second-to-last meeting of the shortened 2018-19 school year Monday night, beginning with a work session on new curriculum for elementary science and high school culinary arts.
Jennings Elementary Principal Travis Howell spoke in the segment, along with Altaira Bogle, family and consumer sciences teacher at the junior-senior high school, and Brenda Kneeshaw, the district’s curriculum specialist.
The regular board meeting began with comments from Superintendent Jerry Pugh, who noted three weeks remaining in the abbreviated school year on the construction calendar.
“Things are condensed,” he said.
He relayed how the school building will be locked down during the summer for safety as construction will spread to the cafeteria, entry-way, reception area and offices.
Crews will work around a week-long Vacation Bible School, and basketball camps will be down to one gym because the elementary school gym will be remodeled this summer.
“Things are on time,” Pugh reported.
He noted that the built-in bookshelves in the library did not withstand removal and the district has accepted a $20,000 bid to replace them, paid for out of the construction contingency fund.
The meeting continued with a presentation on bees by FFA freshman Cora Shindler.
In personnel, the board then approved resignations from Carrie Lipe, high school principal; Cathy Landers, Title I teacher; Kiran Dhillon, science/math teacher, and Lorrie Downs, kitchen assistant.
They approved Jeff Davies as a volunteer for the golf team.
Two-year ASB representative Kylie Kackman followed with what may be her final ASB report, noting results from spring sports to FFA state results, FCCLA year-end banquet preparations and a canceled Mr. Bulldog pageant, due to a combination of reasons.
ASB officer elections for next year were set to be held Wednesday.
