Serving Whitman County since 1877
Playing at Spokane Friday, May 11, Colton beat Selkirk 15-0 and Inchelium 12-4 to advance to a state seeding game.
They will meet Almira/Coulee/Hartline at 6 p.m. Friday at Franklin Park in Spokane to decide the no. 1 and no. 2 seed for the state tournament in Yakima over Memorial Day weekend.
Josie Schultheis pitched against Selkirk, throwing five innings for a two-hit shutout. She had four strikeouts, one walk, allowing two hits.
At the plate for Colton, Rylee Vining went 4-for-4 while Jordyn Moehrle and Emily Schultheis both had two RBIs.
Against Inchelium, Schultheis led with three RBIs.
Preparing for Friday's seeding game, coach Brad Nilson has yet to decide who will pitch. His team aims toward the state tournament with just one new starter since last year's lineup: freshman Maggie Meyer in right field.
What does Nilson think of his team at this juncture, after a spring of long stretches which he never saw them play, or practice, on dirt or grass – because of snow and rain.
“You don't think about it, you just go play,” Nilson said. “Thinking will drive you nuts.”
Gar/Pal stays in it
After a 14-1 loss to Almira/Coulee/Hartline to open the district tournament, no. 3 seed from the Southeast 1B Garfield/Palouse dropped to play Curlew, winning 14-4.
The win kept the Vikings alive, sending them to play Inchelium Friday, May 17, at 4 p.m. at Franklin Park in Spokane.
The game will decide a state berth.
