Colfax swim pool will get wall murals

Colfax City Council members Monday night approved the painting of a mural on two sides of the swim pool building at Schmuck Park. The mural site will be one of four which have been planned by the Colfax Arts Council for painting by artists this year.

Funding for the mural project has come from the Colfax Hotel and Motel excise tax which granted funds to the Arts Council to hire artists to paint murals on downtown buildings.

One of the proposed downtown sites didn't pan out, so the council sought out other locations and the pool building was selected.

Councilman Blaine Golden presented the proposal to the city council Monday night after the Colfax Parks Board, which met before the council session, approved the proposal.

The mural will be painted along the west side of the building which faces the pool and on the south side along Sixth Street across from Jennings Elementary.

Sketches presented to council members show a design with a giant koi fish for the pool side of the building and large flowers on the Sixth Street side.

Mural artist will be Yelena Yunin, who has already been signed to paint the murals. Her spouse, Dennis Yunin, is now serving on the Colfax Police Department.

Golden noted the project could require some coordination between the artist and the swim pool staff once the pool gets into operation for the summer.

Other murals are slated to be painted on the south walls of the Fonk's and Dusty Attic buildings in the N. 100 block of Main and the north wall of the Palouse River Quilts building along Spring Street.
