Snake River Family Festival scheduled for June 8

The public is invited to attend the 2019 Snake River Family Festival Saturday, June 8, at Boyer Park & Marina, upstream from Almota.

The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature free food (while supplies last,) activities for kids and live music performed by Sammy Eubanks.

Attendees will be able to meet with area experts to discuss and learn more about clean hydropower production, navigation systems on the Columbia and Snake rivers and how the dams address the needs of salmon.

Exhibitors Bonneville Power Administration, The McGregor Company, Pacific Northwest Waterways Association, Shaver Transportation Company and Tidewater Barge Lines will highlight how the river system enhances the economy of the region and the state.

WSU Outdoor Recreation will have human-powered boats in the marina for attendees to try, and a Boyer Park & Marina cabin will be available to tour.

Whitman County Sheriff’s Office will attend to provide information about safety on the water.

FIN, the Migrating Salmon from the North Olympic Salmon Coalition, will be on display, and there will be a variety of interactive, river-related educational activities. There will also be an inflatable play structure for kids and Almota Elevator Co. will supply wheat to fill a “wheat box” in which younger kids can play with traditional sand box toys.

Attendees can complete an “exhibitor passport” to win prizes, including two tickets for a half-day Nez Perce Crossing Jetboat Tour from Snake River Adventures.

“The Festival was created to present to the public the recreational and economic benefits of the existing multi-use Columbia Snake River system. The Port of Whitman County will be joined by the Ports of Clarkston and Lewiston, the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association and other valued partners in celebrating the importance of the Snake River to our region,” said Kristine Meyer, Port commissioner.

Additional event information and updates can be found on the event Facebook page or at the Port of Whitman.
