Colfax school construction ramps up

Colfax Superintendent Jerry Pugh reported to the school board Monday about summer construction, now that students and staff have cleared out of the buildings.

The top backside of the Jennings Elementary has been stripped of siding for roof replacement. The high school cafeteria is now “gutted.”

Renovation of the elementary gym is now underway.

The overall schedule for summer includes demolition work at the cafeteria, the front part of the office, the bathrooms and three classrooms downstairs. Also, work will continue in the library, art room, choir room and auditorium where the stage extension has been framed in.

In September, students will return to a revised cafeteria, new STEM laboratory and community room to be used for public meetings, middle school commons on the south end, library, art room, band room, choir room, reception area and office.

The auditorium is expected to be ready for use in November.

“We're hoping in September we'll be one year out from being all done,” said Pugh.

As the school year ended, demolition began on the blue storage building near the bus garage.

The furniture committee met for two hours Monday, going through sample books.

Vendors will bring items down later this summer for the committee to see and try first hand.

The committee then will choose what to buy for delivery before September.
