Parks, Recreation board discuss research at Kamiak Butte

Whitman County Parks and Recreation board members authorized an Eastern Washington University professor to conduct research on plant communities at Kamiak Butte on Thursday afternoon at the Colfax Trail.

EWU's Erik Peterson professor requested to use Kamiak Butte as a way to gain regional information about the vegetation and soil of the original Palouse Prairie ecosystem.

The study would be used to inform decisions about prairie restoration projects at EWU, Peterson wrote in a letter.

Researchers will take soil from sites on Kamiak Butte and use it in a greenhouse study. The vegetation survey will be from July 8 to July 12, and soil collection will be July 31. There won't be any impact on park visitors.

Board members discussed the possibility of further developing the Colfax Trail. There was talk of putting new garbage cans to deter littering, a seasonal bathroom and placing new gravel on the road to the trail.

Board members also brought up developing a shooting range in the county. They decided the board would need to determine if it would be a business or owned by the county. The board would also need to discuss the shooting range with county commissioners.
