Penwells selected for Harvard study

Andrew and Ronda Penwell, Colfax Junior-Senior High School teachers, have been chosen in a group of 77 teachers across the country to go to a summer workshop at Harvard University. The all-expenses paid trip to Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Mass., will be Aug. 18-20.

The Pullman League of Women Voters nominated the Penwells for the workshop which is sponsored by the League's national organization.

The event will focus on the Harvard case-study method of civics education, regarding landmark court cases.

"It is a pretty amazing opportunity. You don't get this chance every day in the education world," said Ronda.

The nationwide League of Women Voters teams with workshop organizers to put on the event for outstanding teachers in the subjects of U.S. history, government and civics. Andrew and Ronda were selected based on their essays on the question, "Why do you think public discussions about key moments in the history of American democracy are valuable?"

The Penwells, who in June completed their first year teaching at Colfax, grew up in Grandview, and both went to WSU.

Andrew teaches social studies and government while Ronda teaches English and world history. She will teach U.S. history next year. In the class, she plans to teach four of the case studies she will learn about at Harvard.

"We're excited about bringing this information back to Colfax and sharing it with the next generation," said Ronda.

The Penwells have three daughters at Jennings Elementary.
