Appels gather for Fourth

Dick and Helen Appel had guests for the Fourth of July. Bruce and Elaine Appel and Spencer, Spokane; Logan Appel and friend Kiera, Mass .; Kate Wollstein, Moscow; Drew Donaldson, Ore .; and Eric and Shannon Appel, Kyle, Sarah and Sidney, Dusty.

Logan was visiting to show his friend the great state of Washington.

Jan Smith recently joined her sisters, Dianne Morris and Jeanne Levy, for a getaway to Walla Walla. They enjoyed shopping, museums and a winery. As a special treat, they visited their aunt Betty Culbertson in her new apartment.

Country Bible Church members and guests enjoyed a picnic on Loren Scaggs’ lawn Sunday. The men grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, and the women brought salads. Dessert was a special birthday cake for Pastor Steve Szasz’s 70th.

Saturday, Karen Broeckel and Jeanette Nolan drove to Spokane and were joined by Patty Wieber in attending memorial services for their cousin, Cathy Schaal, Endicott, at Spokane Bible Church in the Five Mile area. Other relatives attending were Cathy’s brother Ron Schaal, Winona; Ron’s daughter Natalie Smith, Spokane; Al Broeckel, Tacoma; Chris Sloan, Seven Bays, and Art Sauer. Cathy was the youngest daughter of the late David and Esther Schaal and was a Whitman County native.

Saturday afternoon, Karen Broeckel joined about 35 members of her mother’s (Amelia Schaal Broeckel) relatives for their annual reunion at the home of Danny and Nadine Nilles, Medical Lake. Returning home, she had overnight guests of Jeanette Nolan and Andrew Nolan and his daughter Murphy.
