Malt barley harvest day includes band, brewers

A large crowd attended the Baronesse Barley harvest day celebration Saturday morning in the barley field located on a hilltop of a field along Danaher Road south of Steptoe. Approximately 300 people attended the event which was the fourth annual celebration.

The Colfax band Tone Sober played for the crowd, and craft brewers offered their products for the guests to sample.

Bill Myers, proprietor of Joseph's Grainery at Colfax, reported five craft brewers and 14 home brewers had their products on display for tasting by attendees.

A combine with a 48-foot header cut parts of the barley field next to the display tents and band trailer on the hilltop site which provided a clear view of Steptoe Butte to the northeast of the site.

Myers said just a few cuts were made in the field for the Saturday event because the field was still a little green.

Harvest of the 200-acre field was finished Wednesday.

Barley from the field is hauled to LINC Malt in Spokane where it is processed into malt and then marketed to the brewers.
