New high school coaches are set for Oakesdale for the coming school year, following the departure of Brandy Brown, girls volleyball coach, and Dan Brown, girls basketball coach, earlier this summer.
McKinzie Turner returns for the volleyball team, the coach of the 2014 Oakesdale state 1B champions.
“We’re pretty excited to have her back,” said Jake Dingman, Oakesdale superintendent.
Originally from Pomeroy, Turner spent the past three years teaching and coaching at West Valley High School in Spokane.
For girls basketball, Heidi Perry will take over from Dan Brown.
Perry, also the Oakesdale junior high girls basketball coach (in the fall), and a member of the 1987 Tekoa/Oakesdale state B girls championship team, will be assisted by Ken Lindgren, a longtime Nighthawks athletic director, teacher and coach.
“This is the best way it could’ve gone,” Dingman said of having to replace the Browns.
After Turner’s one year in Oakesdale, Brandy Brown led the Nighthawks to three straight state volleyball championships. She had previously coached Tekoa/Oakesdale to three state titles.
Brandy’s husband Dan coached the Oakesdale girls basketball team for two years. He also previously coached the Tekoa/Oakesdale girls.
Dan resigned after Brandy took the Colfax head volleyball coach job and the family moved to Colfax.
Heidi Perry’s brother, Carl Crider, is the Oakesdale boys’ basketball coach.
The Nighthawks’ first volleyball practice is Aug. 27.
