Colfax school board gets report on new year

The Colfax School Board met Monday night and approved a new athletic director, set plans for the coming school year and heard an update on school construction.

The construction crew has 48 regular workday hours remaining until the Sept. 9 opening day for school.

The new athletic director named to replace Nathan Holbrook is Gina Hopkins, a Steptoe school science teacher, who will now teach P.E. in Colfax and oversee CHS sports scheduling.

The board also approved the resignation of Dean Hall, bus driver, and Heidi Lowe, extra-curricular assistant. She remains on staff as ASB advisor, district purchasing agent and bus driver.

The board meeting Monday opened with updates from Superintendent Jerry Pugh.

He noted that the area around the Schmuck Park/football stadium/track bathrooms have been paved with the City of Colfax in a 50/50 split of the cost. The city has also trimmed two large trees in the Jennings Elementary School playground. The city has the right-of-way for the trees, which had lost branches in recent windstorms.

In other news, the Colfax district staff will join the Washington State Leadership Academy.

“What we get out of it, is a coach,” Pugh said.

WSLA representatives will visit the Colfax district 15 or so times during the year while Colfax staff will go up to the Spokane Educational Service District 101 office for four or five days for workshops.

Representatives from WSLA will come to Colfax Sept. 17 to meet the administration team, classroom teachers and support staff.

The Colfax certified staff–teachers and some support staff–will go to Camp Grizzly Thursday for a day of canoe races, archery and an egg drop in which teams must find things in nature to cushion the drop. The trip is paid for by professional development funds from the state.

An all-staff district meeting will be Sept. 3.

“And then it’s off and away to the fair,” said Pugh.
