Jury opts for lesser charge in methamphetamine case

A superior court jury convicted Edward J. Gunn, 57, Pullman, of possession of methamphetamine Aug. 19 after a one-day trial. The jury found Gunn not guilty of the initial charge of drug possession with attempt to deliver and opted for the lesser charge of simple possession.

The case dates back to June 9, 2018, when a known drug user was arrested in Pullman and found to be in possession of a scale, needles and a container, all with heroin residue. On the way to jail, the suspect offered to provide information on Gunn for allegedly selling drugs.

Deputies arranged with the female suspect to call Gunn and arrange for the purchase of methamphetamine. Sgt. Michael Jordan said he and the first suspect waited near Gunn's residence on Webb Street in Pullman and observed the 1994 Oldmobile 88 Gunn was driving arrive at the residence and arrested him. Drug evidence was later found in the car.

Gunn had petitioned the court to enter the drug court program, however his petition was denied. The court ruled he missed the deadline for making an application, had already been involved in pre-trial hearings on the pending charges, and had an extensive criminal record.

Gunn had also filed a motion to suppress evidence in the case, but it was denied July 12 after a court hearing.

Gunn is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.
