DRUG ARREST IN COLFAX

Shanna M. Edwards, 35, Spokane, was booked into jail here early Aug. 28 on the probable charges of driving with a suspended license, and possession of heroin and methamphetamine. Edwards was arrested in Colfax at about 8:20 p.m. after she was seen driving on Main Street in the vicinity of Cougar Food Mart.

Sheriff Sgt. Keith Cooper’s report said Edwards had been arrested by a deputy on 195 near the Spokane Ccounty line and ticketed for driving without a license. He said he later observed her driving on Main Street in Colfax and stopped the vehicle.

She was arrested for driving with a suspended license. Cooper said the suspect’s response to questioning indicated to him that she was possibly under the influence of heroin. The report said during a subsequent search of the vehicle Cooper found a case containing heroin and methamphetamine.

BARN DANCE REQUEST STALLS

A proposed barn dance at the Palouse Empire Fair was dropped from the agenda of the Aug. 26 Palouse Empire Fair board meeting after proponents failed to appear at the meeting. A return to some type of teen dance at fair has been one of the ongoing topics for the fair, which at one time included a dance on the agenda.

Fair Manager Janel Goebel noted this year’s barn dance request was made before the fair announced performances by Wylie and the Wild West and The Hankers will be in front of the new fair grandstand on Friday and Saturday nights after the rodeo sessions on those nights. The concerts are expected to draw spectators who might have previously been interested in bringing back a barn dance.

BRIQUETTES IGNITE FIRE

Pullman firefighters responded shortly after 10 a.m. Aug. 28 to a report of a grass fire and possible structure fire at 1035 NW Ritchie Street. When crews arrived on the scene, they could see flames in a tree. They doused the tree and grass fires and kept the blaze from spreading to a shed and a wooden deck attached to a house.

Fire Inspector Chris Wehrung determined the fire started from briquettes which had been used the night before and placed in a metal can Tuesday and then dumped out of the can Wednesday on the grass. The briquettes were still hot enough to ignite the grass. A vinyl fence and a small part of the backyard shed sustained damages.

Wehrung reminded residents to always put used briquettes in water to insure they are fully extinguished.

KNIFE CITED IN ASSAULT CHARGE

A formal charge of second degree assault has been filed in superior court against Johnathan M.P. Davis, 24, Clarkston. He has been charged with assaulting another person with a knife.

According to the Pullman police arrest report, they responded to a party on NE California at Sigma Chi fraternity shortly after midnight Aug. 23 by a report of a fight involving a knife. When they arrived at the residence, a witness reported Davis became upset when he was not allowed to enter a party at the location. One of the witnesses said Davis became insistent and was taken down to the ground. The witness said when David got up he was holding a knife and challenged others.

The arrest report said one of the other people who had been involved in the fight had sustained cuts to his hands and believed the injuries were caused by the knife Davis was holding.

A folded knife was found in the suspect’s right front pocket.

The victim in the alleged knife assault was listed as Peter Nguyen, 20.
