Fast start Bulldogs top Freeman 29-15

Colfax for a second week came out with a fast start with 21 unanswered points and refused to let Freeman get back in the Saturday home opener on the Schmuck Park field.

The 29-15 win put the Bulldogs at 2-0 on the new season with a trip to Davenport on the agenda for this Friday.

"I was really pleased with the way we started for the second week in a row," Coach Mike Morgan said

Freeman, which seemed to pick up traction in the second half, didn't rattle the scoreboard until the fourth quarter. They scored twice in the frame and finished gambling with onside kicks on a long-shot chance they could close the gap.

Freeman took to the field without lefty QB Jace Phelan, a 215 pounder who took a toll on Colfax last year in the game at Freeman. He was sidelined with rib injuries sustained last week in the Scotties game against Timberlake.

Coach Morgan checked one minus for the Bulldogs: the team's failure to collect points off four turnovers.

Colfax Saturday scored twice in the first quarter with Jacob Brown rambling 84 yards with just 47 seconds off the clock.

QB Layne Gingerich scored on a plunger for a 13-0 Colfax lead with four minutes left in the first quarter.

Colfax hit the zone again when Gingerich connected with Matt Hockett on an eight yard TD pass play. That put the lead at 19-0 with 11:24 left in the first half.

After a 0-0 standoff in the third fame, Freeman scored all 15 of their points in the last quarter with QB Clark Cole shoveling a pass to Keoni Rogen at 2:32 left in the game.

Coles scored again with 17 seconds left.

Colfax came back for their last TD with Brown escaping down the home sideline for 41 yards after catching a pass from Gingerich.

Gingerich hit 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards. Brown packed the ball 17 times for 118 yards.

Freeman booked the last score and attempted an on-side kick in an attempt to close the 14-point gap in the final seconds.

Gavin Hammer had six unassisted tackles and four assists, and Brown had five unassisted stops with three assists.

Caden Brown was credited with three quarterback sacks.

Colfax will play at Davenport Friday. The Gorillas, who are in the NE-North league, were bumped 0-6 by Reardan in Friday's action.

Coach Morgan noted the Gorillas' offense, rated one of the toughest by league coaches, is one of the reasons he changed the Colfax offense this year.

Other NE action saw LRS stop Northwest Christian 36-6, Liberty bump Chewelah 35-15 and Asotin stop Liberty Christian 57-32.
