Pomeroy raids SJEL homecoming; Tom Sherry visits

Another of the Pomeroy brothers Gwinn came to St. John Friday, Oct. 18, for the St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse homecoming game and trained the Eagles to land on his shoulder and obey, 62-6.

But SJEL did lash back at times, driving for a fourth-and-goal in the second quarter, before scoring right at the end of the half on a smooth pass-and-pitch play for a 57-yard touchdown. Quarterback Dylan Campbell threw to Kameron Greenhalgh out wide, who pitched to Doug Stach, who got a key downfield block from sophomore Austin Stanley to take it to the end zone.

Otherwise, Trent Gwinn, a Pomeroy sophomore, ran amok in the sheets of rain, to push Pomeroy's record to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in league. He rushed for 292 yards and five touchdowns.

"They ran the ball pretty much at will," said Eagles Coach Rich Hallenius.

The Pirates are building back up after a year without a varsity team in 2017. Trent Gwinn's brother Jace ran the Pomeroy offense before that, a 2019 graduate.

TOM'S TAILGATE VISITS ST. JOHN

KREM-2 television weatherman Tom Sherry paid a visit to St. John before the game for Tom's Tailgate, doing a live weather report and talking on camera to the volleyball team's Ashlynn Archer and senior running back/ASB president Chais Anderson.

Anderson later accepted a $222 check from KREM-2. Both Pomeroy and St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse received equal donations.

Sherry's visit to the game was chosen in a vote-off between it and Chewelah at Kettle Falls.

The SJEL homecoming matchup received 14,554 online votes, or 50.7 percent. Chewelah at Kettle Falls drew 14,166 votes for 49.3 percent.
