Caleb Gregory

At age 20, Caleb Gregory is already an entrepreneur and business owner. He also happens to be studying business and entrepreneurship at Walla Walla Community College.

Caleb, or Cal as he is called by most people, is part owner with his mom, Val Gregory, of the Frozen Yogurt and Steptoe Butte Soap Company located in the Colfax Mercantile.

While his mom is more focused on the soap and bath side of the business, he is more focused on the designs for the printed T-shirts.

"I wanted to make funny shirts," stated Cal. "And then Mom was like, 'well I want to open up a business,' and I was like, 'Hey! We can combine the businesses and so I can help you with both.'"

Cal has been collecting sayings for the shirts, and has found many of them off the internet.

Being a business owner while studying business in college has been a help. On the first day of class this year, when asked what dream business he would like to open, he could say that he had already opened one.

In Business 101 Cal learned how to build a business plan, and with a few minor tweaks, the business plan they are using now is the same one that he earned a 97 grade on in class.

Cal grew up in Steptoe, close to friends and family, and aside from one year in Oakesdale, attended and graduated from Colfax High School. While in school he played a lot of baseball.

Cal started college in Moses Lake playing baseball and studying Wildlife Management, but that winter discussed his future job with his mom. He was struggling to imagine enjoying a job with wildlife management, despite how much he was enjoying studying it.

Cal described the conversation, "I was like, 'I don't really want to keep doing baseball'. And she was like, 'Well, do you want to open up a business?' and I was like, 'Sure, that'd be fun.'"

While not a fan of most candies, Cal does enjoy chocolate and frozen yogurt. He remembered a year in high school when he went to state and won the state box. The box was filled with Gatorades and candy, and since he doesn't like candy, he took out the drinks for himself, and gave the candy to everybody else.

Last winter when they discussed business options and his mom mentioned frozen yogurt he said, "Yeah, let's do that."

He hopes to continue to grow and expand the businesses in the future, and build a career he truly enjoys.

"Owning your own business, you can create your own fun," Cal said.
