Oakesdale, Gar/Pal lead league as break nears

Oakesdale and Garfield/Palouse are both 2-0 in league with more games this weekend before Christmas tournament play.

Oakesdale (5-0 overall, 2-0 league) first is set to play at Asotin Thursday – a rematch from Dec. 3 which Oakesdale won – followed by a Friday league game at home against Pomeroy (1-4, 1-1). Then it is on to the Reardan tournament Dec. 27-28 followed by a home matchup with 2B Colfax Jan. 2.

Garfield/Palouse (4-1, 2-0) played at Troy Monday, winning 41-35, and will be at Colton Friday for a league game against the Wildcats. After Christmas, Gar/Pal will return to Colton for their Christmas tournament Dec. 26-28.

League play for Gar/Pal will resume Jan. 4 at Palouse against St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse. Oakesdale will return to league action Jan. 4 against Prescott.

Pomeroy 35

After a down year in 2018-19, would the Pomeroy boys be back to contend this year, a team that has been at state more often than not the past 10 years?

Have they found a new Cody LaMunyan, Oscar Morfin, a Bryan McGreevy, a Jacob Tewalt and his three-pointers off the glass, intentional and accurate?

It does not appear so, as Pomeroy opened league play last Saturday and got handled by Gar/Pal.

The young team with just two seniors still looks to build.

Garfield/Palouse won as Blake Jones scored 14 points with 16 rebounds while Jacob Anderson had nine points.

Prescott 32

Playing at Prescott Dec. 13, Blake Jones scored 23 points to lead the Vikings in a league win.

Tied at halftime, Gar/Pal held Prescott to two points in the third quarter and five points in the fourth to take control.

Austin Jones added nine points for the Vikings.

Eagles lose to Pomeroy, Oakesdale

St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse played two league games last weekend, opening at Pomeroy Friday for a 57-47 loss, a game that the Eagles trailed early, then led in the fourth quarter before fading in the last two and a half minutes.

Owen Swannack led with 15 points in the game while Ty Harder had 10.

Trent Gwinn scored 20 points for Pomeroy.

On Saturday, the Eagles played at home against Oakesdale, losing 67-34.

"Oakesdale is very well-coached, very athletic, very well-balanced," said SJEL Coach Mike Stubbs.

Tyler Bober led the Nighthawks with 22 points – including 12 in the first quarter – while Kit Hockett had 13 and Matt Hockett 11.

Ty Harder led St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse with 14 points.

SJEL (1-3, 0-2) plays next on Friday at Wilbur/Creston for a non-league game followed by Tekoa/Rosalia on Saturday at home, also non-league.

St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse will break for Christmas then play in the Reardan tourney Dec. 27-28, to include Oakesdale, Reardan and Inchellium.

"We continue to work hard and put emphasis on improving every day," said Stubbs.
