Colfax school board marks transition at last 2019 meeting

The Colfax School District board met Monday night, Dec. 23, swearing in a new board member and saluting two departing members, 12-year veteran Robert Smith and five-year representative David Nails.

"Both of you have taken this job seriously," said Superintendent Jerry Pugh. He thanked them first for their role in hiring him in 2015.

"For putting your trust in me. It's been the best thing for me, for my career, coming to Colfax."

Pugh continued, "Many do not understand what goes into being a school board member," he said, presenting Smith and Nails with black Colfax Bulldogs pullovers.

Pugh then swore in Brian Becker, an 11-year board member, for another term, along with newcomer Erica Anderson, who will take Smith's seat.

Nails was not eligible for keeping his seat since he moved out of the director district he represented.

The still-open board position for director district two will now be re-advertised by the school for applicants for appointment.

Also Monday, the school board approved a series of items, beginning with the December enrollment report, then the resignation of Shelly Feldner-Schuerman, who was to be the new district two board member – until it was discovered she did not live in district two.

The board approved an overnight trip request for FFA students Cotton Booker and Gunnar Aune, to go to an Advanced Leadership Retreat in Bozeman, Mont., Jan. 2-5. FFA Advisor Michael Heitstuman will drive them.

The board then approved the hiring of Cliff Knauff, assistant high school wrestling coach; Allie Cofer, head junior high volleyball coach; Albert Starrett, head junior high wrestling coach, and Mitch Barney, wrestling volunteer assistant.

The board will meet again Jan. 13.
