Pomeroy girls down Colton

Colton and Pomeroy played for the first time this year – two teams which met in the last two state 1B championship games, both times Pomeroy finishing second.

Last season all four of its losses were to Colton.

That is no longer.

Pomeroy, at home, Jan. 4, blew out the Wildcats, with senior post Maddy Dixon scoring 24 points to lead the Pirates. She had 12 rebounds and four assists.

Pomeroy led 18-15 at halftime and then allowed only five Colton points in the second half. Dixon sat out part of the second quarter with two fouls.

Rylee Vining led Colton in the loss with nine points.

Colton graduated three three-year starters from last year’s team, which won the Wildcats’ 10th state championship in 11 years.

Oakesdale 49

Pullman 44

The Nighthawks met Pullman in Oakesdale Monday night, Jan. 6, and it came down to a minute and a half left with Oakesdale down by a point. Bree Rawls then hit back-to-back shots to put Oakesdale up by three before sophomore forward Kaylee Hinnenkamp got a defensive rebound and was fouled.

She made both free throws for the final five-point margin.

“We really passed the ball well and found each other in this game,” said Coach Heidi Perry.

Hinnenkamp led with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Rawls added 13 points. Oakesdale has now had six different leading scorers in its 10 games.

Pullman dropped to 3-7 overall, 0-2 in the 2A Great Northern League.

Oakesdale (7-3, 2-1) is now tied with Colton for second place in the Southeast 1B league. The two teams play Saturday at Oakesdale. Game time is 4 p.m.

Pomeroy holds first with a previous close win over Oakesdale and a takedown of Colton last weekend.

“We’re working really hard,” Perry said. “Our focus is getting better at the things we do.”
