1B girls basketball: Eagles girls go after goals

In a makeup game from last Friday's snow-out, Colton played at home Monday against St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse and picked up another league win, 76-44. Rylee Vining led with 19 points while Josie Schultheis scored 15 and Taylor Thomas 13.

For SJEL, Brooklyn Bailey led with 24 points in the loss, including six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Senior post Drew Curtis-Brewer, the team's leading rebounder, had 11 points.

"I'm pretty proud of the score (76-44)," said fifth-year SJEL coach Jessica Mills. "We've lost to Colton before 90-14."

Before Monday's game, Mills set a goal with her team to score more than 40 points and take 50 shots. They reached both, shooting 51 times.

The Eagles are now 4-8 overall, 0-4 in league play at the halfway point.

"We're young, I think it's a learning year," Mills said of the 2019-20 team, which lost three, three-year starters to graduation last spring: Allyn Harder, Riley Lamb and Glory Dickerson. Another of last year's starters, Roxy Dickerson, chose not to play this year.

Drew Curtis-Brewer is the team's lone starter back from 2018-19, joined now by junior post Colby Swannack; Brooklyn Bailey, sophomore point guard; junior forward Zoe Bailey, and freshman guard Olivia Kjack.

"We played two of the best games I've had a team play right off the bat, then that team has hasn't yet shown up again," Mills said.

They will play next on Friday at home against Touchet (1-4 in league), who they split with last year, including a home loss on senior night.

"This is a game we definitely want to win," said Mills.

Now that they are at the halfway point of the league season, the coach has a new goal in mind.

"I hope we split with Gar/Pal and beat Touchet twice," Mills said.
