Oakesdale beats Pomeroy
The Oakesdale girls took down unbeaten Pomeroy 38-37.
On Jan. 24, in the Pirates' gym, the Nighthawks evened the series, the two teams now tied at the top of the Southeast 1B.
Oakesdale led by 12 points with 1:20 remaining.
Pomeroy, pressing, got two quick turnovers and cut into the margin. They fouled and Oakesdale missed four three throws in the last minute.
"We had an opportunity to put it away," said Nighthawks Coach Heidi Perry. "They made a furious comeback."
With six seconds left, Oakesdale's lead down to a point, Nighthawks junior LouEllen Reed stole a Pomeroy inbounds pass and was fouled. She missed the first free throw.
On the second, with only sophomore forward Bree Rawls at the lane blocks for Oakesdale – the rest at half court to defend against a last Pomeroy shot – Reed's second free throw bounced out and Rawls tipped it, making Pomeroy scramble after the ball.
Just before the buzzer, the Pirates' Heidi Heytvelt got off a half-court shot.
Maddy Dixon led all scorers with 24 points and 13 rebounds for Pomeroy in the loss.
Oakesdale senior guard Lizzie Perry scored 17 points to lead her team while freshman Jessie Reed got six. Lauryn Rawls and LouEllen Reed each had five points.
Oakesdale is now 6-1 in league with Pomeroy at 7-1. Colton follows in third at 4-3. Garfield/Palouse is in fourth at 3-4.
Last week, at an athletic directors' meeting, Oakesdale drew a higher number than Pomeroy, meaning the Nighthawks would get the no. 1 seed at the district tournament if each wins their final league games.
"Our defense was just fabulous (against Pomeroy)," said Perry. "We really put the clamps down."

Two nights after Oakesdale's definitive win at Pomeroy, they traveled to Genesee to play a team they beat 50-29 on Dec. 7 at home. This time it was different.
"At some point, we're gonna look back and say I'm glad that happened," said Coach Heidi Perry. "What can we learn and how can we respond?"
Oakesdale will play next on Saturday at Colton, game time 4 p.m., followed by final league games at home against St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse Feb. 7 and at Garfield/Palouse Feb. 8.
