Palouse school board approves capital projects

The Palouse school board approved a group of capital projects at its Jan. 30 meeting.

The first is to build a new, more accessible sidewalk between the main school building and the upper gym.

Second, to add a restroom to the weight room, as well as paving work to include the student and staff parking lots, the area behind the elementary school, the driveway between the main and upper school buildings and a front parking area across from the main school entrance.

This could all be done before the start of the 2020-21 school year. Funding is in place from the district's last capital projects levy.

“This summer's the plan,” said Calvin Johnson, Palouse superintendent, with the sidewalk to the upper gym perhaps to be done in one phase followed by a breezeway covering, if later approved.

Johnson had proposed the breezeway at the last meeting, and the board asked to see a design concept to show at their Feb. 27 meeting.

New board members

Also Jan. 30, Joe Merrill was sworn-in as new board chair, along with new members Andy Edwards and Jessica Smith. They join Lindsay Brown – who was appointed in March and elected last November – and existing members Rachel Handly-Chartrand and Merrill.

New Palouse board members succeed longtime representatives Brenda Brown (2007), Keith Rawls and Chris Cook (both 2011).
